It all started with the open gyms and the before school practices. The boys varsity basketball team won first place in the annual St. Francis Borgia Turkey Tournament. The varsity team has played in the turkey tournament since 2010, winning five championships in the last seven years of play. The team, made of returning juniors and seniors, beat Washington 86-47 in the first round, Borgia 62-41 in the semifinals and Pacific 59-52 for the championship. Junior A’Tavian Butler was even named the tournament’s MVP.

“I kept my composure throughout the games and came out with my team ready to play,” said Butler.

To achieve his MVP title, he remained focus and continued throughout the tournament to be a good leader for his team.

Following this tournament, the team had a tough schedule, according to Coach Laney.

“We play such a hard schedule because we have all returning juniors and seniors from last year except for a few,” said Laney.

The basketball team practices six days a week for two hours or more, taking Sundays off. Their goal is to win the district championship. With their returning players and the additional practices, they plan to do just that.

Coach Laney shoots to be the best and with his player’s hard work and dedication, he hopes to do just that.
